Odin Sphere: An Analysis

SOOOOOO!!!!!!!  Last week I completed Odin Sphere on my PS4.

AND OH MY FREAKING GOSH.

IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!

Sooooo...........

Let me just say, I haven't played many RPG Games, but this one was a gem.  A Jewel.  A WORK OF ART.

(SPOILERS.  IN THE CHARACTER ANALYSIS'S)

Let me just say...... I'm unpopular.  I have 3 followers.  Not a lot of people view my blog.  So there is way these opinions are not my own.

So...... The backgrounds and sprites were amazing.  The characters were amazing.  The ending(s) were amazing!!

Their stories were absolutely amazing, and even when I finished the game I wanted more to the story.

And there are 3 ships.  3.  I guess.  Ships.  Yes.  Ships.
And I just cant because their cute.

So.. I loved pretty much all the characters.. But Mercedes and Velvet really stuck out to me.

So....  Here are my favorite parts about the characters:

Gwendolyn.

Now in this point in the game I was just a noob and getting used to it.  I also was paying attention to the talking in the living room (because I started playing this on Christmas Day the day I got it)
So Gwendolyn wasn't the one I originally favored.

But she is a very good character.

She grows up in a land where battle and war is the most important things, where she seeks her father's (the king of Ragnavial) love and praise.  Her sister dies in the very beginning, and entrusts her with her Blue Psypher spear, and her father barely says anything about Griselda's death.  She goes to save her father from a horrible reputation and loss of honor by killing his head general who has been plotting against him, which gets her banished.

She's given the customary punishment of being married to someone.  She is given to Oswald, a warrior that she only knew to be fighting with Ringford, her countries enemy.  She thinks this is a brand of torture in a way, but she ends up truly loving Oswald.  (After giving the ring he gave her to her father, getting it back, and saving him from Queen Odette of the Netherworld)

She is a very loyal character, who though she jumps to conclusions is very pure at heart and brave.  In fact, if it wasn't for Gwendolyn (ENDING SPOILERERRRR:)  Then the world would be ultimately destroyed by Leventhan.

Cornelius.

Cornelius was an interesting character, as much as I was confused in the beginning.  Throughout his story I really found him as a character I loved.

Cornelius is the prince of the Eastern Kingdom of Titania.  He is in love with the lost Princess of Valentine, Velvet.  Their love is scorned by his father, who loves Cornelius none the less.  Velvet's brother, Ingway, does not approve either.  He turns Cornelius into a Pooka using the Pooka's curse, which curses him along with the other citizens of Valentine to an undoable beast-like form.  (Of course, it is undone, eventually, if you unlock the secret ending scene. SPOILERS)  He is put in the Netherworld, and stumbles upon his grandfather, King Gallon, and he gives him a blue Psypher.  Cornelius then sets out on a quest to figure out more of the Pooka's curse, and saves Velvet once, but tries to hide that he is Cornelius from her, because he believes she will not love him.

He is slightly Naive, but a character that learns to take on responsibility and burdens.  He often rushes into the field of battle to protect the ones he loves and defends those who need defending.

Mercedes.  (AHHH I LOVE MERCEDES!!!)

Mercedes, the whiny, slightly arrogant, fiesty Fairy Princess (And then Queen) who doesn't understand the meanings of important things at first.  She doesn't understand ruling, and is used to having things done for her.  That drastically changes.  I loved seeing her character grow and develop.  Most of her development I have to thank Ingway for.  I hate what he did to Cornelius, but his eventual love for Mercedes, especially in his final moments was one of the sweetest things I've ever seen/read/heard.

Mercedes's quest goes across failing to recruit a sorcerer, taking back her kingdom from a rebellion her cousin Melvin leads, Meeting the great dragon Hindel and saving her kingdom from a horrible fate thanks to her "killing" Oswald, and more.  She defeats Ragnavial and Odin with her newly upgraded bow, thanks to Brom, and leads her people back home in triumph.

Its hard to explain why I like her unless you've played the game and seen her story.  Anywayz, her relationship with Ingway is a just... AGhh!!! (Especially if you get the true TRUE ending and wait after the credits, past that amazing picture that I won't go into detail about because spoilers, then you'll see.)
She drops her bow in a pond while in the forest, and breaks down.  A frog offers to retrieve it for her if she does him a favor.  Once he's given her the bow, she flies off, and he eventually hops after her, saving her from a near miss with Beldor and Belial.  He helps her along the way with decisions, until she finally returns the favor and gives him a kiss, which returns Ingway to his human form after being cursed by the three wise men for a time.  He promises they will meet again.  I don't think they realize they love each other until later.  As Ingway tells Velvet and Cornelius to run and leave him in the start of the Armageddon (If you follow the true ending) he says to himself that even in his last moments he can't stop thinking about Mercedes.  When you fight Mercedes against her opponent, she sees his body and yells "You Liar! You said We'd meet again!"  In one of the bad endings, If you fight Mercedes against the Darkova, she'll be fading away, as Ingway holds her in his arms.  When her Phozons go back to the land, Ingway cries out "Oh Heavens Strike me down!" and some stuff like that.  It broke my heart.

But then in the picture after the credits.............. HEehehhehehehehehehehehehe.  I'm not gonna show it or explain it for now, becuase spoilers.

I'm Evil I know.

Oswald.

Oswald I was surprised with.  I thought I wouldn't like him (and yes, his fighting style wasn't my favorite in the world) but I ended up loving his character.  He is Misunderstood, and shown out as evil and ruthless, but underneath that he is a kind person.  He's been betrayed, the woman he loves threw away the ring he gave her, his "father" sold his soul to the Netherworld Queen, and the Halja (pretty much like the grim reaper) are after him.  He has a hard time trusting people, and hides his emotions behind a shell, except when he's with Melvin or Gwendolyn.  He was broken down because of her, and let the Halja take him, which led her to the whole saving him and stuff, but that's her story, not his.

Oswald is fighting for Melvin, his father, and for Ringford at the beginning.  He spies on Ragnavial, and from the shadows he sees a girl, with her father.  Her father tells her she should be more focused on battle.  He leaves without thinking of it, but then this happens.:  Ringford is destroyed.  Once Ringford is destroyed, Melvin has nowhere else to go.  Injured badly from a fight with the new queen, the Halja take him.  He wanders the netherworld for a time, and he feels like he has nobody else to live for since his adoptive father he sees a blue bird spirit, and decides to keep fighting for that.  But then he fights for his freedom against the Queen.  He's saved by a stranger coming into the Netherworld, as the Queen is distracted.  He takes this opportunity and escapes.  He ends up in the North Kingdom, Ragnavial, and is offered a job from Odin.  Oswald says no to begin with.  It takes Odin three tries with three items to convince Oswald, by offering a tower in the forest, a blue spear Psypher, and then he offers his daughter, Gwendolyn.  Oswald realizes Gwendolyn was the blue bird all along, He does love her, but he knows with the sleeping curse put on her that when she awakes she will love him, but not truly.  She will be under a love spell, so he tries to find another way to wake her in a way that when she wakes up she won't be trappened under a love spell.  She is captured by the 3 Wise Men, and then King Onyx of the fire kingdom.  He defeats King Onyx, and Onyx tells him that even if he woke Gwendolyn with a kiss she still wouldn't truly love him.  So Oswald takes Gwendolyn, and promises that Onyx can call on him once, only once, for a favor.  Then he takes Gwendolyn home, and gives her a kiss because he knows even if she doesn't love him, and even if she leaves him, she still won't be trapped under a spell.

Which she ends up loving him anyways, after much consideration.....  So that's cute.

Velvet.

Velvet is the lost princess of Valentine.  She's seen things.  She's seen her country destroyed, her people cursed, and even her grandfather's wrath.  He made her and her brother swear they didn't love their mother, RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER, and then choked their mother.  That has made Velvet wary and fearful, but her determination, wisdom, and caring overshadow these traits.  They only surface in certain circumstances.

Velvet's mission encompasses helping her people, seeking wisdom from the dragon Hindel, to stealing the ring Titrel, and so much more.  She seeks to escape a curse that would mean her death.

All in all Velvet is determined to help her world, and protect it from her grandfather, but knows her limits.  However, (SPOILER) In the ending to save her world she must use the cauldron, turning her into a Pooka.  Cornelius tries to stop her, but she does it.

SPOIIILLLLLLERRRRRRRRRRRR

In the TRUE TRUE ending, she and Cornelius have found the last Valentinian coin, (if you have all of them you can wish for anything, and it is the only way to reverse the Pooka's curse) and they reverse the curse, and live happily ever after.

AND IM RUNNING OUT OF WORLDS.

AAAAAnnyyywayyy~
